Ok, so this "Bad Taste Bear" was a present in a Secret Santa kind of thing a few years ago at work.
It now goes underwater with me on certain dives, ie: those in which we use a decompression station, which for anyone who cares, is basically a series of poles positioned underwater like a trapeze, where you gather at the end of your dive to decompress with everyone else - much safer when doing deep dives requiring lots of decompression...
the deco stations... can you do me a favor and take a pic of them? the guys here are trying to nutt out an alternative to the anchor rope... might be an interesting idea to see how you guys do it, though we do not have the depth here to rack up too much deco time, and in most cases the current would be a nightmare...
like the bad taste bear to hahaha.... dive mascot?
Gives a fairly good account of the various systems we've used (this isn't my site or anything to do with me). We use the 'lazy shot' more than the full deco station. The signing in ring/slate goes on the jump line from the shot to the station/lazy shot. Everyone signs in on the way down, and signs out on the way up. Usually its just a clip with your name on or something.
The key is to get the jump line deep enough, 30-40m seems to be the norm. The last pair to sign out disconnect it (use a quick disconnect carabiner or something, don't tie it in) and as long as there is 4-6lb weight on the bottom of the jump line/lazy shot, it'll swing down and the lazy / station (which everyone is on) will float away nicely.
We've got a station in our club but haven't used it much lately ; skippers doing this sort of diving tend to provide their own lazy shot.
I prefer a station over the lazy shot as it spreads the divers out more. 12 divers trying to finish their deco around a single shotline at 6m doesn't work too well
The bear is my signing in 'thing' ; it gets clipped onto the bottom of the jump line... fairly easy to distinguish from all the others
ahh thats awesome, will show that to the boys... we do not have the depth (usually) that you guys have but we get current... often a lot of it... so will have to work something out
The lazy shot is dead simple to deploy - when we were in Ireland, the main shot went in, then the first pair went in to tie it in (optional). The 2nd pair had the lazy shot line and as they jumped in the skipper's assistant chucked in the buoy attached to the end of it. The 2nd pair descended with the weighted shackle and one attached a small loop via a prussik at 35m or so onto which the shackle was attached... Worked quite well, although I didn't ever actually have the pleasure of doing the hard work
This sort of thing only works though if *everyone* returns to the shotline at the end of the dive...
haha, well so far, i am in a small group of relatively novice (me being the most novice as i am yet to complete my course) divers, there is only 4 of us so its a little easier to handle... we normally have a few more experienced recreational divers helping out of which i was normally one of until i finish the course and join the Tech divers. I printed that out and will see if i can knock something up... looks simple enough.... There is not so much tech diving done in my local area, so my mates made their own club and charter a fishing boat to take us... so the diving side of things is handled by us alone. My mates actually found a new shipwreck that was previously unknown... unfortunately no U-boats like u have up there haha
Definitely very simple to deploy, just make sure the lazy shot's buoy is a decent one as thats the one the boat is staying with. Might be worth coming up with an obvious signal (other than the lazy floating away) to the boat that its safe to pull the shot? You could have a pellet attached to where the lazy/station joins onto the main shot, which floats up the main shot when you detach the lazy? When it hits the surface the dive boat will see it and know everyone is on the lazy...
Some skippers here like everyone to send up a dSMB when they're on the station/lazy, but that can be a bit tricky if there are 12 divers around you all trying to send up bags.... look out above!
New shipwreck? Sounds good! Always nice to be the first ones to dive something
hmm well thats what i need a decent buoy, will have to check the local boat shops... i know the owner of the boat we use has a good one, if he will let us rig something up with that.
hmm i don't like the idea of 12 SMB's going up from one location.... could get messy...
yeah a new ship wreak, not too big but still not a small one, maybe 50m long i have seen it from 40m as i was a support diver for them, did not go deeper than that though.
another training dive today haha, still not happy with the gear setup
Having seen the chaos that results when 12 people send up their SMBs at about the same time, in about the same location, midwater, I'd definitely suggest not doing it...
New wreck sounds good - how deep is it?
If its any consolation, it took me ages before I was happy with my gear configuration etc. Then I switched to CCR and 2 years on am equally unhappy with the new config! Gives me something to sort out this winter, if nothing else
